Robert's primary areas of AXIS and actuarial expertise are annuities, hedging, ALM, and scenario generation.
Robert is a Senior Consulting Actuary at August Actuarial Consulting (AAC) with 15 years of experience in the insurance industry.
Robert spent nearly five years as a developer at GGYAXIS and Moody’s Analytics and led a team of developers focused on building new features in AXIS. As a developer, he wrote specifications for model enhancements to meet client modeling needs, programmed new functionality into the AXIS software, reviewed code written by other developers, and tested new features before they were released to clients. His efforts were focused on annuities, ALM, hedging, stochastic simulation, and scenario generation. He was also focused on many technical topics such as optimization, automation, scalability, and maintenance of a very large and growing code base. A few of his key contributions to AXIS software include:
- Addition of several new derivative assets to the hedging module
- Many new features to support the increasing variety of index linked products in the market.
- Creation of a new formula table-based framework for annuity reinsurance
- Market risk benefit (MRB) roll-forward functionality for the US GAAP Link module
- Restructuring of the scenario code base to improve the runtime of large stochastic models.
Prior to his time at Moody’s, Robert has about ten years of experience in the insurance industry at both Thrivent and Venerable with broad exposure to all the actuarial functions: product development, pricing, ALM, hedging, and valuation. He has supported the development and pricing of new variable and index linked annuities, managed the daily hedging process for variable annuity living benefits, set asset portfolio objectives in relation to the liabilities they back, built projections of hedging strategies on a first principles basis, and analyzed expected reserve and capital impacts of various management initiatives.
Before embarking on his actuarial career, Robert received a B.S. in Economics from the University of Minnesota.
