Cathy’s primary areas of AXIS and Actuarial expertise are life, annuity and A&H valuation and modeling, in addition to reinsurance modeling.

Cathy is a Principal and Consulting Actuary at August Actuarial Consulting (AAC) with 31 years of experience in the insurance industry.

Prior to forming AAC, Cathy was a Director, Solution Specialist at Moody’s Analytics specializing in the AXIS sales process and client support of all US clients.   In Cathy’s 12 years with GGY and Moody’s, she used AXIS daily as a senior member of the Client Support, Sales/Marketing teams and Client Relationship teams. Cathy’s primary areas of AXIS and Actuarial expertise are life, annuity and A&H valuation and modeling, in addition to reinsurance modeling.

In her various roles at GGY and Moody’s, Cathy:

  • Built AXIS models for demonstrations and training using AXIS best practices:
    • Built VM-20 Term and ULSG models using latest AXIS functionality including asset models with Embedded Block and Scenario Generators to perform the inner loop reserve calculations to achieve a one model/one batch run. 
    • Developed LDTI models for life and A&H lines of business.
    • Built PAR Whole Life models with various dividend options and dividend generation.
    • Created self-documenting repeatable DataLink processes.
    • Developed customized reports for many use cases for pricing, valuation, projections.
  •  Built many models for potential clients to illustrate AXIS capabilities and AXIS best practices including:
    • Fixed/Indexed/ Variable UL with/without secondary guarantees including shadow account and/or premium guarantees.
    • Disability Income, Long Term Care, Critical Illness, and other Supplemental Insurance 
    • Combo products, PreNeed, Final Expense, Par Whole Life, and Payout Annuity
    • Various reserving methodologies including VM-20, CRVM, XXX, AG38, FAS60/FAS97/FAS120, and LDTI
  • Demonstrated new features in AXIS, most recently:
    • US GAAP Link, IFRS 17 Link and EBS modules for various lines of business covering implementation steps, best practices, and other client questions.
    • MultiState module for LTC, LTC combo products (WL and UL), complex joint products
    • Basis Reference Technique for enhanced assumption management
  • Reviewed client’s AXIS models.
    • Analyzed client’s dataset and recommended best practices.
    • Identified model changes to improve runtimes and model assumption updates.
    • Assessed documentation, organization, ease of use/understanding of model, DataLink, and batch efficiency.
  • Lead the onboarding of new clients as a Client Relationship Manager
    • Periodic update calls to discuss issues, best practices, new features.
    • Advocate for clients on new features needed and job enhancement requests for clients.
    • Troubleshooting, helped clients with run/error issues.

Prior to Moody’s, she worked as a Corporate Actuary at Shenandoah Life for 11 years.  She developed and implemented GAAP Accounting for this first-time reporting GAAP mutual company in addition to managing an actuarial software conversion and transformation project.  She also led a group of actuaries and oversaw all valuation, business plan and experience studies reporting using various actuarial software. Her prior work at Allstate and EY gave her exposure to various modeling in actuarial software, financial reporting requirements, and audit/consulting work.   Cathy received an Actuarial Science degree from the University of Illinois, Champaign/Urbana.
